«MEGA SCOTT» BACK THE WORLD STRONGEST MAN FOR MORE !
Last year, I had no words to describe my deep joy when I learned that my friend, Canadian Western strongest man Scott Cummine, had won the truck pull with the best time in qualification at the World Strongest Man 2013 in China. He was probably by far the smallest athlete of all. For a few second I had a flashback of me getting to know him in his hotel room 2 years ago in an interview for my documentary film, The hidden side of the Force. From all the athletes I’ve been around since Fortissimus 2008, if I would have to pick the athlete that « wants it badly more then anything else in life » a little more then the rest ; the name of Scott Cummine is surely one of the names what would pop into my head.
WHEN PURE DEDICATION & WILL POWER PAY OFF
From what I understood, Scott’s career as a strong man athlete would not really mean anything to him as long as he would not participate at least once in the World Strongest Man contest. Back then it seemed like L-P Jean would never have to compete again in Canada to receive a free invitation at the WSM and the other athlete invited could only be the national champion. Scott had finished 3rd place 3 years in a row. But the gap between him and 2nd place was considerable and seeing him beating rising phenomenon Jean-Francois Caron for the first place to earn his ticket to the World Strongest Man, was a hard thing to imagine. Especially since Scott is smaller in size than the 3 real contenders for the title in the country. But I could see in Scott’s eyes that he deeply believed that one day he would make it to that prestigious gathering of world’s elite athletes by continuing to train hard. Little by little, getting bigger and stronger, every year.
At that precise instant, I wanted to test Scott and make him react in order to go further in his head. I told him : «What if, despite all your efforts, it doesn’t happen? » There was a small pause and he said with a smile : « I don’t know, I’ve never thought about that. Humm.» I felt like, for a short moment, I had destroyed his dream with a reality check. To be honnest, I felt bad cause I also had crazy ambition that became real. I did not know what to think. Did I really feel he knew that it was his fate to happen some day or was it just some unrealistic dream that keeps this athlete (and many others) motivated on a daily basis ? (Keep in mind I’ve heard a lot of things from athletes through the years.)
I didn’t know and I could not tell if Scott Cummine would one day achieve his life long dream. The only thing I was sure of, is that Scott Cummine deserved it much more than the athlete that had a free invitation to go to the World Strongest Man. (A few weeks later, I wrote to the public relation person of the WSM and expressed my point and asked the question, why an athlete who had not competed once in the year in Canada was invited to represent his country at an international event. Even if I spoke to someone on the phone, my email was never answered.)
So, I know that right now, Scott is living a situation that it is even beyond his wildest dreams ; he’s BACK to the World Strongest Man competition in Los Angeles for more !
ALL THE BEST OF SUCCESS TO SCOTT CUMMINE
